The number on the hygrometer is not the number on the wall
Relative humidity is relative to temperature. Cool a parcel of air and its relative humidity rises even though it contains exactly the same water, because cold air can hold less. The air touching an outside wall is colder than the air in the middle of the room, so its relative humidity is higher — and mould grows on the wall, not in the middle of the room. The table gives the humidity at the surface for a room at 20 °C, computed with the standard Magnus formula (the same one our calculator below uses):

Two things stand out. A wall at 14 °C — an ordinary reading for an uninsulated exterior wall in January — needs only 48 percent in the room to reach 70 at the surface. And at 60 percent in the room, a 12 °C wall is not merely damp; the air at it has reached its dew point and water is forming. That is the wet patch that appears overnight behind furniture on an outside wall.
Where Italian flats are cold: the ponte termico
Italian builders have a word for the exact spot where this happens, and it is worth knowing because it tells you where to look: the ponte termico, thermal bridge. In a typical Italian building — a reinforced-concrete frame filled in with brick, or older solid masonry — the concrete columns and beams, the balcony slab that runs straight through the wall, and the reveal around each window conduct heat outwards faster than the brick beside them. On the inside they are the coldest patches of wall, often by several degrees. Mould traces them faithfully: the vertical stripe on the corner where a column is, the line above a balcony door, the frame of a north-facing window.
Furniture makes it worse. A wardrobe against an outside wall stops the room's warm air from reaching that wall at all, so the surface behind it sits close to the outdoor temperature. Pulling it 5–10 cm off the wall is the cheapest fix on this page.
The heating schedule makes it worse
Many Italian flats are heated by a shared condominium boiler on a fixed daily schedule, or by a gas caldaia that the household runs for a few hours morning and evening to keep the bill down. Either way the walls never get warm. Air heats in minutes; masonry takes hours, and a wall that is warmed for three hours and left for nine spends most of the day cold while the air in front of it carries the moisture of cooking, showers and people. Bedrooms are the classic case: unheated to save money, closed at night, one or two people breathing out water for eight hours, and a cold outside wall.
This is why the most effective heating change is not more heat but steadier heat — a room held at 16–18 °C continuously has warmer walls than one blasted to 22 °C for two hours.

Check your own wall
You need two readings: the room's temperature and humidity from any hygrometer, and the temperature of the coldest surface. An infrared thermometer (the kind pointed at a pan or a forehead) reads a wall from across the room; failing that, a cheap contact thermometer taped to the corner overnight. Enter the three numbers:
Green means that surface is fine on the day you measured; amber is the grey zone above 60 percent; red is the range where spores germinate. The calculator says nothing about what the wall does at 3 a.m. in February — measure on a cold morning, not a mild afternoon.
Cleaning is not the fix — but here is how to do it once
Once the surface is dry and warmer, small patches can be cleaned. Use one product only — never mix a chlorine-based cleaner with vinegar or any acid, which releases chlorine gas — and follow the label rather than any recipe you find online; we deliberately give no concentrations. Ventilate, wear gloves, and do not dry-brush a patch (that spreads spores). Because cleaning removes the colony, not the conditions. If the wall is still cold and the air still damp in January, the same spot regrows. Fix the surface temperature or the moisture, then clean once.
My hygrometer says 50 percent. How can there be mould?
The hygrometer measures the air in the middle of the room. Relative humidity rises as air cools, and the air in contact with a cold wall is colder than the room. At 20 degrees and 50 percent, the humidity right at a wall of 14 degrees is about 73 percent, already in the range where spores germinate. With a 14-degree wall the room only has to reach 48 percent for that wall to sit at 70.
Should I heat more or ventilate more?
Both, for different reasons. Heating warms the wall: three degrees of wall temperature, from 14 to 17, take the surface humidity in that example from 73 to about 60 percent. Ventilating removes water: opening the windows fully for five to ten minutes several times a day swaps the damp air for drier outdoor air without cooling the walls the way a window left ajar does. Neither replaces the other.
Compressor or desiccant dehumidifier for an Italian flat?
In a heated room at 16 to 20 degrees a compressor dehumidifier works well and costs less to run. In a room that is left unheated, a cold north-facing bedroom or a taverna in the basement, the air can be so cool that a compressor unit barely extracts anything; below about 12 degrees a desiccant model is the right tool.
