Which one sounds like you?

Three typical situations from our guides — and what actually helped. No invented testimonials, just the most common cases our readers bring.

“Renting a flat with tilt-and-turn windows — the AC's flat window kit just doesn't fit.”

What helps: a fabric window seal kit (€15–30) closes the tilted gap — no drilling, landlord-safe.

“Top-floor flat, 28 °C at midnight — I just can't sleep.”

What helps: cross-ventilate after midnight, shade before noon — and a quiet portable AC for the bedroom if heat persists.

“My AC runs all day and the electricity bill scares me.”

What helps: knowing the real €/hour — and timing cooling to the hours that matter instead of running it all day.

Which cooler should you actually buy?

A 2-minute guide for the 2026 heatwave. In much of Western Europe, high installation costs and long wait times mean a no-installation unit you can order today often makes the most sense.

1. You want real cooling in one room → portable air conditioner

A portable AC (like the popular Midea PortaSplit style) is a genuine air conditioner: it compresses refrigerant and pumps hot air out through a window kit. It's the only no-installation option that truly drops the temperature, not just moves air around. Expect €250–600 depending on BTU and whether it also heats. Look for at least 9,000 BTU for a bedroom, 12,000+ for a living room.

2. You have a big or open-plan room → mobile / monobloc AC

For larger or open-plan spaces, a higher-BTU mobile unit on wheels does the job. These cost a bit more (€300+) but cool spaces a small portable can't keep up with. Check the room-size rating (m²) before buying and make sure you can route the exhaust hose to a window.

3. You're on a budget or renting → air cooler or fan

If you can't fit a window exhaust or don't want to spend €250+, an evaporative air cooler (from ~€60) or a good tower fan (from ~€30) gives real relief — especially in drier heat. They won't lower the room temperature like an AC, but they're cheap, quiet, and need zero installation. Perfect for renters who can't drill or vent.

4. Your flat feels muggy, not just hot → dehumidifier

Humidity is why 28°C can feel unbearable. In damp ground-floor flats, a dehumidifier (from ~€120) can make the air feel noticeably cooler and helps you sleep, often for less power than an AC. Worth it if your home traps moisture.

Questions

Does it cost me anything to use?

No. The calculators, the Heat Check and all recommendations are free. You pay the exact same price on Amazon whether you use our link or not — we just earn a small commission from Amazon.

How do you choose the recommended models?

We compile models from public reviews and customer ratings and honestly mark that we haven't tested them ourselves. The BTU calculator and Heat Check tailor the recommendation to your room size and situation.

Portable AC vs. installed AC — which is better?

An installed split system is more efficient long-term, but in much of Europe installation runs €1,000+ and waitlists are weeks long during a heatwave. A portable unit you order today is the fastest way to cool down now, with no installer needed.

Which countries do you cover?
