Short answer: work in this order — keep the sun off the glass from outside, ventilate only while the outside air is colder than the room (in a heatwave that is roughly 4 to 8 a.m.), and only then add a cooler. Size it for a top-floor room rather than for the floor area alone, and check how you will vent a roof window before you buy the unit, not after.

It draws in warm room air, cools it and returns it — the waste heat leaves through the window hose. Real cooling, not just moving air around.

Why the top floor is a different problem

A top-floor or attic room is not simply a warm room. It collects heat from three directions at once, and each one needs a different answer.

The roof is the building surface with the longest and most direct exposure to the sun, and in most conversions there is much less mass between the outside and your ceiling than there is behind a wall. Then there is the building itself: warm air rises through stairwells and open doors and has nowhere to go above you. Finally, roof windows are tilted towards the sky, so they catch sun over more hours than a vertical window on the same façade.

The practical consequence is that a top-floor room keeps warming into the evening, long after the outside temperature has peaked, and it starts the next day warmer than it started the last one. That is why a heatwave feels cumulative up there.

Step one: stop the heat arriving

Everything else is damage control. In order of how much they actually do:

Step two: ventilate at the right hour, and in the right direction

Ventilation only cools when the air outside is colder than the air inside. In a heatwave that window is narrow — roughly the last hours before sunrise. Opening up at midday does the opposite of what you want.

In an attic room there is a refinement worth knowing: put a fan in the window blowing outward rather than inward. The room is releasing heat stored in the roof structure all night, and pushing that air out pulls cooler air in through the rest of the flat. A fan pointed at your body cools you by evaporation while it runs; a fan pointed out of the window lowers the room temperature.

Step three: sizing a cooler for a room under the roof

If you get to the point of buying, size it for the situation and not just for the floor area. Our BTU calculator has a sun-exposure setting; a top-floor room is what the highest setting is for. The same 20 m² needs noticeably more capacity under a roof than it does on a lower floor.

Be realistic about what follows: a single-hose portable unit in a poorly insulated attic under afternoon sun will run close to continuously, and its running cost follows directly from that. The venting problem nobody mentions until it is too late

The most common way an attic cooling plan fails is not capacity — it is the window. A monoblock unit has to put its hot exhaust outside, and a roof window is a sloped opening with a completely different geometry from the tilt-and-turn window most seal kits are made for.

An unsealed opening is the single biggest reason people conclude that portable air conditioners “do not work”: the unit blows the exhaust out and the negative pressure pulls the same hot air straight back in through the gap.

Why is my attic bedroom so much hotter than the rest of the flat?
Three things stack up. The roof is the surface most exposed to the sun and there is usually far less material between it and you than in a wall. Warm air from the whole building rises and ends up on the top floor. And roof windows sit at an angle that catches sun for more hours of the day than a vertical window does. None of those is fixed by a fan — they are all about heat arriving.

Does closing the blinds during the day actually help?
Inside blinds help a little; outside shading helps a lot. Once sunlight is through the glass the heat is already in the room, and a blind can only absorb it and re-radiate it. An external awning, shutter or a reflective screen mounted outside the pane stops it before it enters. If outside mounting is impossible, a reflective film or a thermal blind is the fallback, not the ideal.

When should I open the windows in a top-floor room?
Only while the outside air is colder than the room, which in a heatwave usually means between roughly 4 and 8 in the morning. Opening at midday brings hot air in. Attic rooms benefit most from a fan placed in the window blowing outward at night: it removes the heat the roof released into the room rather than just stirring it around.

Can a portable air conditioner cope with an attic room?
It can, but expect it to run more than it would downstairs, and size it generously — the same room area under a roof needs more cooling capacity than one on the first floor. The harder problem is usually venting: a roof window needs a seal made for a sloped opening, not a standard tilt-window kit.
